Best free golf scorecard apps (2026): what 10 free tiers really record, with or without GPS
"I just want to keep my score and a few stats. I don't need yardages." "Every free golf app I try turns out to be a GPS app with a subscription screen." If that sounds like you, you are not alone: most "best free golf app" lists are really lists of GPS rangefinders, and they rarely say what the free tier lets you record. This guide does the opposite. We read the App Store listing of ten scorecard apps and laid out, side by side, what the free tier records, whether it shows ads, and what you would pay for.
Every fact below comes from the app's US App Store listing or the developer's own website, read on October 24, 2026. Prices and free tiers change, so treat them as "as of October 2026, check the store listing". We make GolfCounter, one of the apps compared here, and we say so wherever it appears.
Quick answer
- Count strokes, putts and penalties on the Apple Watch, no course setup: GolfCounter (ours). Free to record; no GPS.
- Most detailed free scorecard on the phone: mScorecard or Golf Pad, which list putts, penalties, fairways and more.
- Free scoring on the Watch from a big GPS app: 18Birdies or SwingU, which list Watch scoring among free features.
- The simplest possible scoresheet, iPhone only: The Golf Counter (Ryan King), last updated in 2023.
- Stats are the point: check the paywall first. Hole19 lists its stats under Premium and Golf GameBook lists statistics as Gold only.
1. Who a free golf scorecard app without GPS is for
A GPS golf app is a rangefinder first and a scorecard second. That is the right tool if you want distances to the green and have nothing else that gives them. But a large group of golfers wants something narrower: an honest score for every hole, a putt count, a record of the balls that went out of bounds or into the water, and a history to look back on.
- Golfers who already own a laser or a GPS watch. Paying again, or watching ads, for distances you already have adds little.
- New golfers. An accurate score teaches you more than an exact yardage in your first seasons.
- Golfers who lose count. On a messy hole, the problem is not distance; it is remembering whether that was six or seven.
- Golfers who play courses that are not in a database, such as a small local nine-hole course or a course abroad. A pure scorecard does not care which course it is.
- Golfers who care about battery. The Golfshot, Hole19 and SwingU listings each warn that GPS running in the background can drain the battery. A scorecard does not need it.
For this reader, the question is not "which app has the best maps". It is "which app lets me record what I care about, for free, without getting in the way". That is the question the tables below answer.
2. What "free" should mean in a golf scorecard app
Almost every golf app is free to download. What differs is what the free tier lets you do after that. When we read each listing, we looked for six things.
Score entry
Can you enter a score for every hole without paying? All ten apps say yes. This is the baseline, not a differentiator.
Putts
Putts per round is one of the most useful numbers an amateur can keep, because it separates the long game from the short game. A score of 6 with three putts is a different problem from a 6 with one putt. If you want to know why this matters and how to count putts consistently, see our guide on how to count putts and track putts per round.
Penalties
Out of bounds, water, lost balls and unplayable lies are where many high scores come from. An app that only stores a total per hole hides them. Several listings mention penalties without saying whether they are in the free tier; we mark those as "not stated" rather than guess.
Stats
Most apps keep a round history for free. The line between "stats" and "advanced stats" is where the paywall usually sits. Strokes Gained, benchmarks against other golfers and club-by-club breakdowns are almost always paid.
Apple Watch
An app can support the Apple Watch and still put Watch scoring behind the paywall. Several GPS apps give free yardages on the wrist but list scoring on the Watch as a paid feature. If you want to keep score from the wrist, this column matters more than the presence of a Watch app.
Ads and what is paid
Few listings say "this app shows ads". But several list "ad-free" as a paid benefit, which tells you the free tier carries ads. We report exactly what each listing says and leave the rest as "not stated".
3. Free golf scorecard apps compared: what the free tier records
The apps below are widely used golf scorecard and stat-tracking apps, most of which appear in US search results for "best free golf scorecard app" and "golf stat tracker app free", plus two scorecard-only apps. Ratings are from the US App Store, October 2026. The table scrolls sideways on a phone.
| App | App Store rating | Score entry | Putts | Penalties | Stats (free vs paid) | Apple Watch | GPS | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GolfCounter (ours) | Not enough ratings to display yet | Yes, 9 or 18 holes | Yes, separate counter | Yes: OB, water, lost ball, unplayable | History and stats free; Premium adds AI round analysis | Yes: strokes, putts and penalties on the Watch, works without the iPhone | No. Course search covers Japan only; elsewhere type the course name | App page |

App Store, October 2026. "Not stated" means the listing did not say either way. Golf GameBook's free/Gold split comes from its Gold Membership page; its App Store listing (2.3K ratings, 4.7) does not separate them.
What this table tells you
First, putts and penalties are not a given in a free tier. Only Golf Pad's listing names both as free features. SwingU gives putts free but lists penalties in the paid Plus scorecard. Others mention them without saying which tier they belong to.
Second, a Watch app is not the same as free Watch scoring. Golfshot, Hole19 and Golf Pad all support the Apple Watch, but each lists scoring on the Watch as a paid feature. 18Birdies and SwingU list Watch scoring as free.
Third, "stats" is a moving target. Golf GameBook lists statistics as Gold only, and Hole19 lists club and overall stats under Premium. If stats are the reason you want an app, read the paid-tier list before you commit a season of rounds to it.
4. Ads, paid tiers and prices
This table shows what each listing says about ads and what the paid tier costs. The prices are the in-app purchase entries shown on the US App Store page, which lists a selection of entries, not always every plan.
| App | Ads in the free tier | Paid tier | Price (App Store, October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GolfCounter (ours) | Yes in the free tier (banner slots); Premium removes them | Free: scores, putts, penalties, Apple Watch counter, history, stats. Premium (subscription, free trial): AI round analysis and some social extras | See the App Store listing for current pricing |
| mScorecard | Not stated | Optional Premium subscription (1, 6 or 12 months) | In-app purchases listed from $2.99 to $29.99; Premium 12 months $23.49 |
| The Golf Counter | Not stated (a 2014 release note mentions "App Ad Updates") | None listed; description says "100% Free" | Free; last updated October 2023 |
| Golf Pad | Yes: "Go ad-free" is a Premium feature | Premium (annual subscription, 14-day trial) | In-app purchases listed from $19.99 to $49.99; most entries $39.99 |
| SwingU | Not stated; registered users get a daily newsletter with partner promotions | SwingU Plus and SwingU Pro | Entries include SwingU Plus $59.99, SwingU Pro $99.99 and SwingU Premium Monthly $13.99 |
| 18Birdies | Not stated | 18Birdies Premium (free trial for eligible users) | In-app purchases listed from $2.99 to $99.99; yearly $69.99 or $99.99 |
| TheGrint | Not stated | TheGrint Pro | Pro $3.99/month or $39.99/year among listed entries |
| Golfshot | Yes: "ad-free experience" is a Pro feature | Pro membership (7-day free trial) | In-app purchases listed from $4.99 to $99.99 |
| Hole19 | Yes: "Ad-free experience" is a Premium feature | Premium and Intelligence (14-day Premium trial) | Premium Pro $12.99/month or $69.99/year; Intelligence $24.99/month or $99.99/year |
| Golf GameBook | Yes: "No Ads (turn off banner advertisement)" is Gold only | Gold Membership (14-day trial on the yearly plan) | Website: €59.99/year or €19.99/month; App Store entries $19.99 to $59.99 |
As of October 2026; check the store listing before you buy. Prices can differ by country and between introductory and regular plans.
The pattern is clear. The big GPS apps (Golfshot, 18Birdies, SwingU, Hole19, Golf Pad, TheGrint) fund their free tiers with subscriptions that are mostly about distances, club advice and Strokes Gained. If you never wanted GPS, much of what those subscriptions sell is not for you. That is good news: the free tier may be all you need, as long as it records what you care about.
5. App-by-app notes
Short notes on each app, focused on what a golfer who only wants a scorecard should know. Everything here is from the linked listing or website.
mScorecard
mScorecard calls itself "the ultimate golf scorecard" and its listing is the most scorecard-focused of the larger apps. It lists strokes, putts, fairway hits, greens in regulation, up-and-downs, sand saves and penalties for up to five players, plus handicap calculation and side games such as Skins and Nassau. The listing says the standard version is free and an optional Premium subscription adds "additional features", but it does not say which ones. It has GPS distances too, so it is not a GPS-free app; you just do not have to use that part.
The Golf Counter (Ryan King)
Not to be confused with GolfCounter. This is a minimal iPhone and iPad scoresheet whose listing says "100% Free", "No internet connection required" and "Minimal battery usage". There is no Apple Watch app and the listing does not mention putts, penalties or stats. Its last update was in October 2023. If all you want is a digital pencil on the phone, it does that; if you want to track putts or use the Watch, look elsewhere.
Golf Pad
Golf Pad's listing is the clearest about its free tier. Free features include a scorecard for up to four golfers that logs putts, penalties, fairways and sand saves, plus stats and round history, shot tracking and offline course maps. On the Watch, the free tier gives front, middle and back yardages; keeping score on the Watch is listed among the Premium "advanced Apple Watch features". "Go ad-free" is also listed as a Premium feature.
SwingU
SwingU's listing says "GPS, scoring, and handicap tracking are always free". The free scorecard tracks score and putts, and the free Apple Watch app gives distances and scoring for you and your group. Penalties, driver accuracy and bunker play sit in the "enhanced scorecard" of the paid Plus tier, and Strokes Gained is in Pro. The listing also says registered users are subscribed to a daily newsletter that includes partner promotions, with one-click unsubscribe.
18Birdies
18Birdies has the largest rating count in this guide (306K, 4.9). Its free features include a digital scorecard, handicap tracker, stats and round history, shot tracking, and an Apple Watch app with distances, scoring and shot tracking. Advanced stats and Strokes Gained are Premium. The listing does not say whether putts or penalties are tracked in the free scorecard, or whether the free tier shows ads.
TheGrint
TheGrint is built around handicap tracking. Its listing says the free plan "covers the main things", naming score tracking, GPS and playing with friends, and its scorecard section lists fairways, greens in regulation, putts and penalties. Pro adds advanced stats, community benchmarks, Green Maps and "enhanced Apple Watch features". The listing does not say whether the free tier has ads.
Golfshot
Golfshot is a GPS-first app, and its listing is open about the split. Free includes GPS distances, shot tracking, scoring, statistics and Apple Watch GPS. Pro unlocks, among other things, Apple Watch scoring and an ad-free experience. So you can keep score on the phone for free, but scoring on the Watch is paid.
Hole19
Hole19's free scorecard records scores, putts, fairways hit and greens in regulation, and the free Watch app gives distances for phone-free play. Its Premium list includes club and overall stats, a handicap calculator, Apple Watch scoring and maps with "full score input", and an ad-free experience. A higher Intelligence tier adds AI round reports and Strokes Gained.
Golf GameBook
Golf GameBook is a social scorecard built for groups, tournaments and live leaderboards. Its Gold Membership page shows stroke play scoring, live leaderboards and saved rounds as free, while statistics, GPS and the rangefinder, extra game formats and "No Ads (turn off banner advertisement)" are Gold only. If you want a free shared scorecard for a group, it fits; if you want free stats, it does not.
6. How to choose a free golf scorecard app
Answer these in order and stop at the first "yes".
- Do you want to record on the Apple Watch, not the phone? Pick an app whose listing says Watch scoring is free: GolfCounter, 18Birdies or SwingU. If you also want to leave the phone in the bag, read which golf apps work on the Apple Watch without the iPhone.
- Do putts and penalties matter to you? Choose an app that names them in the free tier: Golf Pad (putts and penalties), GolfCounter (putts plus OB, water, lost ball and unplayable) or SwingU (putts only, penalties in Plus).
- Do you mainly score for a group or a society day? Look at mScorecard (up to five players and side games) or Golf GameBook (free stroke play and live leaderboards).
- Do you want stats without paying? Avoid apps that put stats behind the paywall (Golf GameBook lists statistics as Gold only; Hole19 lists its stats under Premium). Golf Pad, 18Birdies and Golfshot list basic stats as free.
- Do ads bother you? Golfshot, Golf Pad, Hole19 and Golf GameBook list ad-free use as a paid benefit. For the rest, the listing does not say, so try one round before you settle in.
- Do you just want a digital pencil? A minimal scoresheet like The Golf Counter will do, but note it is iPhone-only and was last updated in 2023.
If you are still torn between a counter and a GPS app, our comparison of Apple Watch golf score apps, free vs paid and GPS vs counter-only splits the field into those two groups.
7. Where GolfCounter fits
GolfCounter is our app, so here is a plain summary of what it is and what it is not.
It has no GPS. There are no yardages and no course maps. If you want distances, keep your laser or GPS app and use GolfCounter for the scorecard.
Course search covers Japan only. The app includes 2,400+ courses in Japan. Outside Japan you can still record every hole and keep your full history; you skip course selection or type the course name.
What you record for free: strokes for 9 or 18 holes, putts on their own counter, and OB, water, lost ball and unplayable counts. On the Apple Watch you tap once per stroke; a long press removes the last stroke. The Watch app works without the iPhone and sends the round to the phone later.
What you see on the phone: each round hole by hole with score, putts and penalties, your history, and stats such as your recent average, your best round and putts per round. The app also runs on Android phones and Wear OS watches.
What is paid: a Premium subscription with a free trial adds AI round analysis, which reads your hole-by-hole data and points to where the strokes went, along with some social extras such as video posts, editing posts and live sharing with more than four players, and your trend across all rounds.
More detail is on the GolfCounter app page.
8. How we checked
We opened each app's US App Store page on October 24, 2026 and recorded the rating, the device list, the free and paid feature lists in the description, and the in-app purchase entries. Where the listing did not separate free from paid features, we checked the developer's website; for Golf GameBook, its Gold Membership page has a free-versus-Gold table, which we used. TheGrint's membership page did not load as readable text for us, so its App Store listing is the source.
We did not install and test every app for this article, and we did not count ads by playing rounds. Every cell reports what the developer says. Where the developer says nothing, we wrote "not stated". Ratings are the counts shown on the US App Store page and will have moved by the time you read this.
FAQ
What is the best free golf scorecard app if I do not need GPS?
Pick by what you want to record. If you want strokes, putts and penalties counted on the Apple Watch with no course setup, a counter-first app such as GolfCounter fits. If you want a detailed scorecard with fairways, putts and penalties, Golf Pad lists those as free features, and mScorecard lists them too (its standard version is free, but the listing does not say what Premium adds). Check the store listing before you rely on any of them, because free tiers change.
Can I track putts and penalties for free?
Some apps say so and some do not. As of October 2026, the Golf Pad listing names putts and penalties among its free scorecard features, SwingU names putts in the free scorecard but puts penalties in its paid Plus scorecard, and GolfCounter records putts and OB, water, lost ball and unplayable counts at no charge. Several listings mention putts or penalties without saying whether they are free.
Which free golf scorecard apps have no ads?
Most listings do not say. The ones that do say it the other way round: Golfshot, Golf Pad, Hole19 and Golf GameBook list an ad-free experience as part of their paid tier, which tells you the free tier carries ads. GolfCounter works the same way: the free tier shows banner ads and Premium removes them. For the other apps in this guide, ads in the free tier are not stated on the listing.
Can I keep score on my Apple Watch for free?
It depends on the app. 18Birdies and SwingU list Apple Watch scoring among their free features. Golfshot lists Apple Watch scoring under Pro, and Hole19 lists full score input on the Watch under Premium; Golf Pad lists keeping score on the Watch among its advanced Watch features in Premium. GolfCounter counts strokes, putts and penalties on the Watch at no charge, and the Watch works without the iPhone.
Is GolfCounter free?
Recording rounds is free: scores, putts, penalties, the Apple Watch counter, history and stats. There is a Premium subscription with a free trial that adds AI round analysis and some social extras. GolfCounter has no GPS, and course search covers Japanese courses; elsewhere you can still record every hole and type the course name.
Why would anyone want a golf app without GPS?
Because many golfers already have distances covered by a laser rangefinder or a GPS watch, or simply do not need them. A scorecard-only app has no course map to load, does not depend on the course being in a database, and avoids the background GPS that several listings warn can drain the battery.
Summary: pick the free tier that records what you care about
The best free golf scorecard app is the one whose free tier records the numbers you care about, not the one with the best maps. If you only want a score, almost any app will do. If you want putts and penalties, check that the listing names them as free. If you want to score from the wrist, check that Watch scoring is not on the paid list. And if ads matter, note which apps sell "ad-free" as a paid benefit.
If you want strokes, putts and penalties counted on the Apple Watch with no GPS and no course setup, try GolfCounter for a round.
Try a scorecard app that just counts
GolfCounter counts strokes, putts and penalties on your Apple Watch and keeps the scorecard on your phone. Recording rounds is free; Premium adds AI round analysis.
