Golf apps with no subscription (2026): 13 apps sorted by what you can do without paying monthly
"I don't want another monthly charge just to write down my score." "Every golf app I download is free until the first round, then the subscription screen appears." If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Most golf apps are free to download, but very few say plainly what you can still do if you never subscribe. We read the US App Store listing of 13 golf apps and sorted them into three groups: apps you pay for once (or never), apps that sell a subscription but let you record rounds for free, and apps whose paywall sits on the features most golfers keep an app for.
Every fact below comes from the app's US App Store listing or the developer's own website, read on October 24, 2026. Prices and free tiers change, so treat them as "as of October 2026, check the store listing". We make GolfCounter, one of the apps compared here, and we say so wherever it appears.
Quick answer
- Pay once, never subscribe: golf score counter with watch ($5.99), Stroke Counter for Golf ($4.99) or Simple Golf Counter – StrokeTap ($1.99). All three are Apple Watch stroke counters with no in-app purchases listed.
- Free, no purchases at all: The Golf Counter, a basic iPhone scoresheet with no Watch app, last updated in 2023.
- A subscription exists, but you can record every round without it: GolfCounter (ours), SwingU, 18Birdies, Golf Pad, mScorecard and TheGrint.
- Want to score on the Watch for free? GolfCounter, SwingU and 18Birdies list it as free. Golf Pad, Golfshot and TheGrint list it as paid.
1. What "no subscription" can mean in a golf app
When golfers search for a golf app with no subscription, they usually mean one of three things. It helps to know which one you want before you start downloading.
A. Pay once, or pay nothing at all
The app has a price on the App Store, or is free, and lists no subscription. You get everything the app does, and nothing renews. In 2026 this group is made up almost entirely of small Apple Watch stroke counters from independent developers. They do one job: count strokes, sometimes putts, on your wrist.
B. A subscription exists, but recording is free
The app sells a subscription, but the free tier lets you record a full round, keep the history and see basic stats. You can use it for years without paying. The subscription sells something else: Strokes Gained, AI analysis, green maps or club advice. This is where most of the big golf apps sit.
C. The free tier is a demo of the paid one
The app is free to download and records a score, but the features most golfers keep an app for, such as stats, a handicap or scoring on the Apple Watch, are on the paid list. You can use it without a subscription; you just cannot use much of it.
The groups are not a quality ranking. A group C app can be excellent if you want GPS and are happy to pay. They answer one question only: what happens if you never subscribe?
2. Golf apps without a subscription: all 13 compared
The table shows, for each app, how you pay, what you can do without a subscription, what sits behind the paywall, whether score entry on the Apple Watch is free, and what the listing says about ads. Ratings and prices are from the US App Store, October 2026. The table scrolls sideways on a phone.

App Store, October 2026; check the store listing before you buy. "Not stated" means the listing did not say either way. The App Store page shows a selection of in-app purchase entries, not always every plan, and prices can differ by country. TheGrint's Watch scoring and trial length come from thegrint.com, because its App Store listing does not label them.
Two things stand out. First, a one-time purchase is still possible, but only among small, single-purpose Watch counters; none of the big GPS apps describes a one-time purchase in its US listing, only subscriptions. Second, "free" and "free on the Watch" are different promises. Half of the subscription apps here give you a free scorecard on the phone and charge for the same scorecard on your wrist.
3. Group A: golf apps you pay for once (or never)
These apps list no subscription at all. You trade depth for simplicity: none of them has GPS distances, handicap tracking or a large community behind it.
golf score counter with watch ($5.99)
The most complete one-time-purchase app we found. Its listing describes counting score and putts on the Apple Watch, tracking penalties and clubs (which it calls "quite advanced" and "a little difficult to set"), recording where each shot was hit, counting with the Digital Crown, watch face complications and cloud backup. It says plainly that it requires an Apple Watch to record. It has 64 ratings averaging 4.5 and was updated in September 2026.
Stroke Counter for Golf ($4.99)
A focused Watch counter for one or two players, with quick reset between holes and a complication. The listing says it works on the Watch with no phone needed. It has a single rating so far, a 1-star review saying the counter had to be reopened whenever the watch went to sleep, so it is too early to judge.
Simple Golf Counter – StrokeTap ($1.99)
The cheapest paid option: a digital replacement for a bead counter or clicker, with large buttons, hole switching on the Watch and a practice habit tracker. The listing does not mention putts or penalties. It requires iOS 18.5 or later and has three ratings.
Tee Total (free with ads)
Tee Total counts strokes on the iPhone and Apple Watch, totals the score and keeps past games hole by hole. A March 2024 release note says it is "now FREE with ad support", and the only in-app purchase listed is "Ad Free" for $4.99. The listing does not say whether that is a one-time unlock, but it is not labelled as a subscription.
The Golf Counter (free)
Not to be confused with GolfCounter. A minimal iPhone and iPad scoresheet whose listing says "100% Free", "No internet connection required" and "Minimal battery usage". There is no Apple Watch app and no in-app purchase. The last update was in October 2023.
If one of these fits, the main risk is not cost; it is maintenance. Small apps depend on one developer keeping up with each new watchOS. Look at the update date on the listing before you pay. For a closer look at Watch counters, including free ones, see our guide to golf stroke counter apps for the Apple Watch.
4. Group B: a subscription exists, but you can record every round free
These apps sell a subscription, yet their listings put score recording, round history and basic stats in the free tier. If you never subscribe, you lose analysis and extras, not the scorecard.
GolfCounter (ours)
Recording rounds is free: strokes, putts and penalties on the Apple Watch or iPhone, plus history and stats on the phone. AI round analysis, an ad-free app and a few social extras are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial. More in where GolfCounter fits below.
SwingU
SwingU's listing makes the clearest promise of any big app: "GPS, scoring, and handicap tracking are always free, no subscription required." The free scorecard tracks score and putts, and the free Apple Watch app gives distances and scoring for you and your group. Penalties sit in the paid Plus "enhanced scorecard", and Strokes Gained is in Pro.
18Birdies
18Birdies lists GPS, a digital scorecard, a handicap tracker, stats and round history, shot tracking and Apple Watch scoring among its free features. Premium adds advanced stats, Strokes Gained and an AI swing analyzer. The listing does not say whether putts or penalties are in the free scorecard.
Golf Pad
Golf Pad's free scorecard is one of the most detailed: up to four golfers, with putts, penalties, fairways and sand saves. The catch is the Watch. Free Watch use is limited to yardages; keeping score on the Watch is a Premium feature, as is going ad-free.
mScorecard
mScorecard lists strokes, putts, fairways, greens in regulation and penalties for up to five players, plus handicaps and side games. The listing says the standard version is free and Premium adds "additional features", but it does not say which, so check in the app.
TheGrint
TheGrint's listing says the free plan "covers the main things", naming score tracking, GPS and playing with friends. Its website is more specific about the Watch: distances on the wrist are free, and "With Pro, score the round" from the watch.
Which free tier records the most, such as putts, penalties and stats, is a separate question. We compare that in detail in our guide to free golf scorecard apps and what each free tier records.
5. Group C: the paywall sits on what you came for
These apps are free to download and you can enter a score on the phone without paying. But stats, Watch scoring and an ad-free screen are on the paid list.
Hole19
The free tier gives GPS, a scorecard with scores, putts, fairways and greens in regulation, and Watch distances. Premium covers the handicap calculator, club and overall stats, "full score input" on the Watch and an ad-free experience. A higher Intelligence tier adds AI round reports and Strokes Gained. Premium Pro is listed at $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, with a 14-day trial.
Golfshot
Golfshot's free list includes GPS distances, scoring, statistics and Apple Watch GPS. Its Pro list includes front, center and back-of-green distances, hazard distances, Strokes Gained, Apple Watch scoring and an ad-free experience. You can keep score on the phone for free; on the Watch, you pay.
If you mainly want GPS and expect to subscribe sooner or later, these are strong apps. If you are reading this page because you do not want a subscription, they are the ones most likely to push you towards one.
6. How to choose a golf app without a subscription
Answer these in order and stop at the first "yes".
- Do you never want an upgrade screen? Pick from group A. A one-time purchase such as golf score counter with watch, Stroke Counter for Golf or StrokeTap needs an Apple Watch; The Golf Counter works on the iPhone alone.
- Do you want to score on the Apple Watch without paying monthly? Choose an app whose listing says Watch scoring is free: GolfCounter, SwingU or 18Birdies, or one of the group A counters. Avoid Golf Pad, Golfshot and TheGrint for this. Our comparison of Apple Watch golf score apps, free vs paid goes deeper.
- Do you need free GPS distances too? GolfCounter and the group A counters have none. SwingU, 18Birdies, Golf Pad and TheGrint list free GPS.
- Do putts, penalties and stats matter? Stay in group B and read the free list closely. Golf Pad names putts and penalties as free; SwingU gives putts free and penalties in Plus.
- Do ads bother you? Tee Total says it carries ads, and Golf Pad, Golfshot and Hole19 sell ad-free use as a paid benefit. The other listings do not say.
7. Where GolfCounter fits
GolfCounter is our app, so here is exactly what it does and does not do without a subscription.
Free: counting strokes for 9 or 18 holes, putts on their own counter, and OB, water, lost ball and unplayable penalties. On the Apple Watch you tap once per stroke and long-press to remove one; the Watch can record a full round without the iPhone and sends it to the phone later. On the phone you get every round hole by hole, your history and stats such as your average, best round and putts per round.
Premium: AI round analysis, an ad-free app and a few social extras are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial. The US App Store lists it at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year (October 2026). So we would not call GolfCounter a "no subscription" app; it is an app you can record every round with without subscribing.
Not included: there is no GPS and no course map. Course search covers Japan only; outside Japan you skip course selection or type the course name and still record every hole.
More detail is on the GolfCounter app page.
8. How we checked
We opened each app's US App Store page on October 24, 2026 and recorded the price, the in-app purchase entries, the rating and count, the free and paid feature lists in the description, and the release notes where they mention ads or pricing. For TheGrint, the App Store listing does not say whether Watch scoring is free, so we used the free-versus-Pro section of thegrint.com.
We did not install and test every app for this article, and we did not count ads by playing rounds. Every cell reports what the developer says, and where the developer says nothing we wrote "not stated". All 13 candidate listings were readable, so none was left out.
FAQ
Is there a golf scorecard app that is a one-time purchase?
Yes. As of October 2026, three Apple Watch counters on the US App Store are sold for a single upfront price with no in-app purchases listed: golf score counter with watch ($5.99), Stroke Counter for Golf ($4.99) and Simple Golf Counter – StrokeTap ($1.99). Tee Total is free with ads and lists one in-app purchase called "Ad Free" for $4.99; the listing does not say whether it is a one-time unlock. Check the store listing before you buy, because prices change.
Is there a golf app with no subscription and no paywall at all?
The Golf Counter (by Ryan King) is free, lists no in-app purchases and describes itself as "100% Free". It is a simple iPhone and iPad scoresheet with no Apple Watch app, and its last update was in October 2023. The one-time-purchase Watch counters also have no paywall once you have paid for them.
Can I keep score on my Apple Watch without a subscription?
Yes, with the right app. The one-time-purchase counters include Watch scoring in the price. Among free apps that also sell subscriptions, SwingU and 18Birdies list Watch scoring as free, and GolfCounter counts strokes, putts and penalties on the Watch at no charge. Golf Pad, Golfshot and TheGrint list scoring on the Watch as a paid feature, and Hole19 lists "full score input" on the Watch under Premium.
Do free golf apps show ads?
Most listings do not say. Tee Total says it is free "with ad support". Golf Pad, Golfshot and Hole19 list an ad-free experience as part of their paid tier, which tells you the free tier carries ads. GolfCounter is the same: banner ads in the free tier, none on Premium. For the other apps in this guide, ads are not stated on the listing.
Does GolfCounter need a subscription?
Not to record rounds. Scores, putts, penalties, the Apple Watch counter, history and stats are free. AI round analysis, an ad-free app and a few social extras are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial (listed at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year on the US App Store, October 2026). GolfCounter has no GPS, and course search covers courses in Japan; elsewhere you can still record every hole.
Is a one-time purchase better than a free app with a subscription?
It depends on what you want to record. A one-time-purchase counter is simple and has nothing more to buy, but it usually tracks fewer things and depends on a single developer keeping it updated. A free app with an optional subscription often records more for free, such as putts, penalties and stats, but you need to check where the paywall sits before you commit a season of rounds to it.
Summary: decide what "no subscription" means for you
If you never want to see an upgrade screen, a one-time-purchase Apple Watch counter is the only true "no subscription" golf app left on the US App Store, and you trade features for that. If you just want to record every round without paying monthly, several free apps let you, as long as you check where the paywall sits, especially for scoring on the Watch. And if you want GPS, Strokes Gained and green maps, expect to subscribe.
If you want strokes, putts and penalties counted on the Apple Watch, with recording free and no course setup, try GolfCounter for a round.
Record every round without subscribing
GolfCounter counts strokes, putts and penalties on your Apple Watch and keeps the scorecard on your phone. Recording rounds is free. AI round analysis, an ad-free app and a few social extras are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial.
