Garmin golf watch vs Apple Watch (2026): pick by whether you need yardages or just a score
"Should I buy a Garmin Approach or just use my Apple Watch for golf?" "Is an Apple Watch good enough on the course, or will I regret not getting a real golf watch?" Most comparisons answer this as if every golfer wants a rangefinder on the wrist, and most of them were written in 2021 to 2023 about models you can no longer buy new. This guide starts from a different question: do you need distances, or do you only need an accurate score? We checked the current 2026 models, prices and battery claims on Garmin's and Apple's own websites, and we explain the option most comparisons leave out.
Prices and battery figures come from garmin.com and apple.com (US), read on October 24, 2026. They are the makers' official claims, not our own tests; we did not test these watches side by side for this article. We make GolfCounter, an Apple Watch score counter, and we say so where it appears.
Quick answer
- You want yardages to the green and hazards on your wrist: a Garmin Approach. Course maps are built in, and the battery in golf mode is rated far longer.
- You already wear an Apple Watch and want yardages too: add a GPS golf app before buying a second watch, and check whether it needs the iPhone to start a round.
- You only want an accurate score (strokes, putts, penalties): keep the Apple Watch and use a counter app. No maps, no course setup, and it can work without the phone.
- You want one watch for everything, every day: Apple Watch. Garmin wins on the course; Apple wins off it.
1. The one question that decides it: do you need distances?
A golf watch does two different jobs, and the Garmin vs Apple Watch question looks very different depending on which one you care about.
Job one is distance. How far is it to the front of the green, to the bunker, to carry the water? This is what a Garmin Approach is built for. Garmin says every current Approach model comes preloaded with 43,000 courses worldwide and shows front, middle and back yardages out of the box. An Apple Watch can do this too, but only through a third-party GPS golf app, and the quality of the experience then depends on that app.
Job two is the score. How many strokes did you take on the 7th, how many were putts, did that tee shot go out of bounds? Every Approach model has a digital scorecard. On the Apple Watch, scoring comes either as a screen inside a GPS app or from a dedicated counter app that does nothing else.
If you need job one and own nothing that gives you yardages, the Garmin case is strong. If you already have a laser, play the same course every week, or simply lose count on a messy hole, you only need job two, and you may not need a new watch at all.
2. Garmin vs Apple Watch for golf: six things compared
Here is how the two compare on the things that matter during and around a round. "Apple Watch" means the watch plus whatever golf app you install, since the watch itself does not include golf course maps.
| What matters | Garmin Approach | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Course maps and distances | Built in. 43,000 preloaded courses and front/middle/back yardages on every current model, per Garmin. Some map features need a Garmin Golf membership | Only through a third-party GPS app. Course coverage, map detail and price depend on the app |
| Battery during a round | Rated up to 15 to 30 hours in GPS or golf mode, depending on model | Rated up to 7 to 18 hours of workout tracking (outdoor run test), depending on model. A counter app without GPS distances asks less of the battery |
| Keeping score | Digital scorecard and stat tracking (strokes, putts, greens and fairways) on every model | Either a scoring screen inside a GPS app or a counter app built only for scoring. Whether it works without the iPhone depends on the app |
| Everyday smartwatch | Notifications, fitness and health tracking; Garmin Pay and music on many models | The full Apple Watch: apps, messages, calls on cellular models, Apple Pay, health features |
| Price | $199.99 to $799.99 for current Approach models | From $249 to from $799, plus any golf app subscription you choose |
| Flexibility | One integrated golf system with the Garmin Golf app | Pick any app, and switch apps without changing the watch |
Garmin features from each model's garmin.com product page; Apple prices and battery from apple.com. Both read on October 24, 2026.
Where Garmin clearly wins
Distances without setup and battery life in GPS mode. A Garmin Approach is a golf device first. You turn it on at the course and the map is there, and the official GPS-mode battery numbers are far higher than Apple's workout figures.
Where the Apple Watch clearly wins
Everything off the course, and choice. If you wear a watch every day, the Apple Watch does far more between rounds. On the course you choose the golf app, so you can pick a full GPS app, a simple counter, or both.
Where it is closer than most reviews say
Keeping score. Older comparisons assume an Apple Watch golf app needs the iPhone synced before the round. That is true of some GPS apps, but not of every Watch golf app in 2026. Our guide to golf apps that work on the Apple Watch without the iPhone sorts them by what each developer says.
3. Current Garmin Approach golf watches and prices (2026)
These are the Approach watches with a live US product page on garmin.com on October 24, 2026. Every one of them lists 43,000 preloaded courses, front/middle/back yardages and a digital scorecard. The differences are the display, the extra golf features and the battery.
| Model | US list price | Battery (Garmin's claim) | What sets it apart | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approach S12 | $199.99 | GPS mode: up to 30 hours. Watch mode: up to 10 weeks | Entry model, monochrome display. 43,000 preloaded courses, front/middle/back yardages, digital scorecard, stat tracking | garmin.com |
| Approach S44 | $299.99 | GPS mode: up to 15 hours. Smartwatch mode: up to 10 days | AMOLED touchscreen. Digital scorecard, stat tracking, handicap scoring; full vector map and touch-targeting with Garmin Golf membership | garmin.com |
| Approach S50 | $399.99 | GPS mode: up to 15 hours. Smartwatch mode: up to 10 days | Adds PlaysLike distance and a heart rate sensor over the S44 | garmin.com |
| Approach S70 (42 mm / 47 mm) | $649.99 / $699.99 | GPS mode: up to 15 hours (42 mm) or 20 hours (47 mm). Smartwatch mode: up to 10 or 16 days | Virtual caddie, putt tracking; wind speed and direction need the Garmin Golf app | garmin.com |
| Approach S72 (43 mm / 47 mm) | $799.99 | Golf activity mode: up to 15 hours (43 mm) or 20 hours (47 mm). Smartwatch mode: up to 10 or 16 days | Garmin calls it its most advanced golf smartwatch. Two-player scorecard, lost ball timer; green reading and aerial imagery with Garmin Golf membership | garmin.com |
Prices are Garmin's US list prices and do not include sales. Garmin's battery figures for the S44, S50 and S70 assume default display settings (gesture wake-up in smartwatch mode and always-on while golfing). Garmin may still sell older models, and retailers may list others; we only included models we could open on garmin.com.
How to read the lineup: the S12 is the budget option and does the distance job with the longest GPS battery claim. The S44 and S50 add a color touchscreen and smartwatch features. The S70 and S72 are the premium models with features such as a virtual caddie. If all you want is yardages to the green, the S12 already covers it.
4. Current Apple Watch models and battery (2026)
Apple sells three Apple Watch lines in the US: SE 3, Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple does not publish a golf-specific battery figure, so the closest official number is "workout tracking", which Apple measures during outdoor runs without an iPhone and with the heart rate sensor on.
| Model | US price | All-day battery (Apple's claim) | Workout tracking (Apple's claim) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | From $249 | Up to 18 hours (32 hours in Low Power Mode) | Up to 7 hours |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | From $399 | Up to 24 hours (38 hours in Low Power Mode) | Up to 10 hours |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | From $799 | Up to 50 hours (84 hours in Low Power Mode) | Up to 18 hours (25 hours Extended, 45 hours Max Extended) |
Prices from apple.com/shop/buy-watch; all-day battery from apple.com/watch/compare; workout tracking from apple.com/watch/battery. Apple notes that battery life varies with use, settings, cellular network and signal strength.
Note the price overlap. The Ultra 4 starts at $799, the same as the Approach S72. The Series 12 at $399 sits next to the Approach S50 at $399.99, and the SE 3 at $249 sits between the S12 and the S44. On price alone, you are choosing between a golf device and a general smartwatch, not between cheap and expensive.
5. Battery over 18 holes: reading the official numbers
A round of 18 holes with travel and warm-up can take five hours or more, so battery is a fair worry. Here is what the official numbers do and do not tell you.
- Garmin's numbers are golf numbers. "GPS mode" or "golf activity mode" means the watch is reading your position for distances. Every current Approach is rated at 15 hours or more in that mode, roughly three times a typical round.
- Apple's numbers are running numbers. "Workout tracking" is measured during outdoor runs. A GPS golf app does a similar kind of work but is not the same test, so the 7, 10 and 18 hours are a guide, not a promise for golf.
- A counter app is a different case. An app that only counts strokes does not need GPS for distances, so it asks less of the battery than a GPS golf app. We do not publish an hour figure for it because we have not measured one under controlled conditions.
One published first-hand report: Tom's Guide wore the original Apple Watch Ultra for a round and wrote that, after starting on a practically full battery, the watch was down to about 75% by the clubhouse (Tom's Guide, April 10, 2023). That is one round on a first-generation Ultra, used to track activity, so take it as an anecdote, not a benchmark.
Practical takeaway: with an SE 3 or Series 12 and a GPS app, start the round fully charged and consider Low Power Mode if your app allows it. With a Garmin Approach or an Ultra, battery is unlikely to be the deciding factor for a single round.
6. Two ways to golf with an Apple Watch: GPS app vs counter app
This is the part most Garmin vs Apple Watch articles skip. They treat "Apple Watch for golf" as one thing: install a GPS app, sync it with the iPhone, and compare it with a Garmin. In 2026 there are two quite different ways to use an Apple Watch on the course.
Path 1: a GPS golf app (the Garmin alternative)
Apps such as Golfshot, TrackMyGolf, GolfWatch or Golfonaut turn the Apple Watch into a rangefinder that also keeps score. This is the path to compare with a Garmin Approach.
- Good for: golfers who want yardages but do not want a second watch.
- Watch out for: subscriptions for the richer features, battery use from continuous GPS, and whether the app needs the iPhone to start a round. Golfonaut, for example, says on its website that you need an iPhone to start a round, while other listings promise a fully standalone Watch app.
We compare these apps by price, Watch-only use and features in Apple Watch golf score apps compared.
Path 2: a counter-only app (no Garmin equivalent)
A counter app does not try to be a rangefinder. The main screen is a big number you tap once per stroke, with separate counts for putts and penalties. There is no map to download and no course to pre-load.
- Good for: golfers who already have distances covered with a laser, who play a course they know, or who mainly want an honest scorecard and stats.
- Watch out for: no yardages at all. If you later want distances, add a GPS app or a rangefinder.
This path changes the Garmin vs Apple Watch question. If you only need the score, the comparison is no longer "a $299.99 golf watch vs an Apple Watch with a GPS subscription". It is "a new golf watch vs the Apple Watch you already own plus a counter app". See our guide to golf stroke counters for the Apple Watch for what to look for: a large tap target, a separate putt count, and an easy undo.
7. Decision table: Garmin golf watch or Apple Watch?
Find the row that sounds most like you.
| If you… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want yardages and own no rangefinder or Apple Watch | Garmin Approach (S12 or S44 to start) | Maps built in, long GPS battery, lowest total price for the distance job |
| Want yardages, green contours and a virtual caddie | Garmin Approach S70 or S72 | The deepest built-in golf features; check which need a Garmin Golf membership |
| Already wear an Apple Watch and want yardages | Apple Watch + a GPS golf app | Try the app first; buy a Garmin only if the app or battery lets you down |
| Already have a laser and only want the score | Apple Watch + a counter app | Distances are covered; a counter adds an accurate scorecard without GPS |
| Are new to golf and keep losing count | Apple Watch + a counter app | An accurate score matters more than exact yardages at this stage |
| Want to leave the iPhone in the car or bag | Garmin, or Apple Watch with an app that says it works standalone | Garmin plays on its own; on Apple Watch it depends on the app |
| Want one watch for daily life, work and golf | Apple Watch | Far more apps and smart features off the course |
| Play 36 holes or long golf trips without charging | Garmin Approach or Apple Watch Ultra 4 | The highest official battery figures in each lineup |
One more option: you do not have to choose only one tool. Plenty of golfers use a laser or GPS for distances and a counter on the wrist for the score. That split is often cheaper than a premium golf watch and easier to use on a busy tee.
8. Where GolfCounter fits
GolfCounter is our app, so here is a plain summary of what it does and does not do in this comparison.
It is not a Garmin alternative for distances. GolfCounter has no GPS rangefinder, no yardages and no course maps. If you need distances, a Garmin Approach or a GPS app is the right tool.
It is the counter path on the Apple Watch. Open the Watch app, start on hole 1 and tap once per stroke; finish after 9 holes or go on to 18. Putts have their own counter. OB, water, lost ball and unplayable each have a counter you add to with a tap and remove with a long press. A long press on the stroke counter removes the last stroke.
It works on the Watch alone. You can start the round, count every hole and save it on the Watch without the iPhone. When you hold the send button, the round transfers to the phone, now or the next time the two connect.
On the phone you get hole-by-hole scorecards, putts per round, your averages and bests, and your trend over time.
Price: downloading the app and recording rounds is free. AI round analysis and an ad-free app are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial.
Outside Japan: course search currently covers 2,400+ courses in Japan. Elsewhere you can still count strokes and keep your full history; you skip course selection or type the course name.

FAQ
Is a Garmin golf watch better than an Apple Watch for golf?
For distances, usually yes. Every current Garmin Approach watch is preloaded with 43,000 courses, according to Garmin, and shows front, middle and back yardages without an extra app. The Apple Watch needs a third-party golf app for that. If you only want to keep an accurate score, the gap closes: an Apple Watch with a counter app does that job, and you also get a full smartwatch for the rest of the week.
Can an Apple Watch replace a Garmin Approach on the course?
It can if you install a GPS golf app and are happy with how that app handles maps, scoring and battery. Some GPS apps need the iPhone to start a round, so check the listing first. If you do not need yardages, a lightweight counter app is enough and avoids the GPS setup entirely.
Which lasts longer during a round, Garmin or Apple Watch?
On paper, Garmin. Garmin lists up to 15 to 30 hours in GPS or golf mode depending on the model. Apple lists up to 7 hours (SE 3), 10 hours (Series 12) and 18 hours (Ultra 4) of workout tracking, measured during outdoor runs, not golf. A golf app can use the battery differently, so treat both sets of numbers as official claims, not round-by-round results.
Do I need a subscription for golf on either watch?
Not for the basics on Garmin: the product pages list course maps, yardages, a digital scorecard and stat tracking as watch features, while extras such as green contours and some map features say "with Garmin Golf membership". On the Apple Watch it depends on the app you choose. Many GPS apps are free to download with paid tiers. GolfCounter is free to download and to record rounds; AI round analysis and an ad-free app are part of Premium, a subscription with a free trial.
Can I keep score on an Apple Watch without my iPhone?
Yes, with the right app. Some Watch golf apps work on their own and some need the phone nearby. GolfCounter lets you start the round, count strokes, putts and penalties, and save it on the Watch alone; the round transfers to the iPhone the next time the two connect.
Is the Apple Watch Ultra worth it for golf?
Only if the battery or the larger, brighter screen matters to you, or you want it for other sports too. Apple lists the Ultra 4 at up to 18 hours of workout tracking and up to 50 hours of normal use, well above the Series 12 and SE 3. At $799 it costs the same as the top Garmin, the Approach S72, which has golf maps built in.
Summary: Garmin for distances, Apple Watch for the score and everything else
- If you need yardages and own nothing that gives them, a Garmin Approach is the simpler golf tool, from $199.99 for the S12.
- If you already wear an Apple Watch, try a GPS golf app before buying a second watch.
- If you only want an accurate score, an Apple Watch with a counter app is enough, and it can work without the iPhone.
- Battery: Garmin's golf-mode claims run from 15 to 30 hours; Apple's workout claims run from 7 to 18 hours and are measured on runs, not rounds.
Keep score on the Apple Watch you already own
If you do not need yardages, try GolfCounter on your next round: tap once per stroke, track putts and penalties, and save the round on the Watch. Recording is free; AI round analysis and an ad-free app are part of Premium.
